Small Claims May Carry A Potential Recovery Of Legal Fees And Costs

Recently, a new client of DBR Law, P.A. approached the firm complaining that his former employer terminated him improperly, and owed him a severance payment.  Small claims such as this are heart-rending for individuals who have been mistreated and who are in desperate need of the money, especially while unemployed.  However, such claims are not efficiently handled by the courts.  By the time a lawyer is retained and paid, the legal fees and costs can outweigh the recovery.  Fortunately, Florida law provides that certain employment compensation claimants also can recover their attorneys’ fees and costs.  By raising this fact with the former employer at the outset of the engagement, DBR Law, P.A. was able to obtain a quick settlement for its client without the need to file a lawsuit.
